Abstract
Summary: The cells of the nutritive layer of a young gall (approximatively 8 days old) are compared to the young leaf cells and to the nutritive layer cells of an older gall (aged 3 weeks). The cells of the nutritive layer of the young gall look like young, undifferentiated cells: a high nucleo-plasmatic ratio, small vacuoles, undifferentiated plastids. The presence of unusually prominent nucleoli, a large amount of ribosomes and rough ergastoplasma, numerous autophagic vacuoles are evidence for a high cellular activity. In an old gall these cells are characterized by cellular, nuclear and nucleolar gigantism, more vacuolation and a lower nucleo-plasmatic ratio. The plastids without starch and without grana are often cup-shaped, including a cytoplasmic area. The highly lobed nucleus shows intranuclear “lamellar bodies”. The cells of the nutritive layer of both, the young and the old gall, include many lipid droplets. All these observed features characterize the next 2 cell layers around the larval cavity. The further away a cell is from the parasite, the more these cytological features diminish; at a certain distance from the larval cavity, simple parenchyma cells compose the nutritive tissue, with the exception of the provascular cells of the radial strands.
